The Fascine

Attractions Carnarvon

Description

The "Fascine" is the name given to the bay formed by the south arm of the Gascoyne River.

Description

Carnarvon’s central waterway, known as the Fascine, was named after an 1800s building technique used to construct the embankment on the south arm of the Gascoyne River. Fascine means “water held back by a pile of sticks.” In 1896 fl ood waters caused severe damage to Olivia Terrace and a tender was called to build a fl ood protection system. Stately palms line the water way, making it a lovely spot for a picnic or a stroll. The sunset views are magnifi cent and you may even see a dolphin.
