WALKING & CYCLING
Thanks to Carnarvon’s lovely climate, exploring the town and its surrounds on foot or on a bike is the perfect way to find your bearings. There are walking trails along the Old Tramway and the Mangrove Board Walk, and you’ll find locals taking a stroll along the Fascine at sunset.
OLD TRAMWAY WALK TRAIL
This 2.5km walk trail connects the Foot Bridge on the Fascine Town Beach with the Carnarvon Heritage Precinct. The original tramway linked up the Carnarvon Goods Shed, now the Carnarvon Civic Centre with the One Mile Jetty. Trains once transported supplies from the One Mile Jetty to the 'Goods Shed'.
The walk trail is home to unique Flora and Fauna found in the region. During the months of July to September, the Dawson Burrowing Bee’s start to appear. The Bees are unique to the Gascoyne region and can also be found in the Kennedy Range National Park. Macro photographers will enjoy exploring the Whitlock Island area.
MANGROVE BOARD WALK
The Mangrove Boardwalk as its name suggests, meanders out into the mangroves where one can be at peace with nature and take in another aspect of the One Mile Jetty. This boardwalk has been constructed by students using recycled plastic materials and is an ongoing project. The Boardwalk is 400m trail from the Precinct to the Gascoyne River Mouth with views of the river and the jetty. Along the way, you will be able to read about the Saltmarshes.
THE HMAS Sydney REMEMBRANCE WALK
The Fascine is the unique word for Carnarvon’s waterfront. In 1896 flood waters caused severe damage to Olivia Terrace and a tender was called to build a protective bank. The name ‘Fascine’ is derived from the Latin word “Fascine”, meaning “bundle of sticks bound together”. Bundles of stickers were built up along the foreshore to help prevent erosion during the major river flows.
The Fascine redevelopment was completed in 2015, the redevelopment included new playground, BBQ facilities and the Walk of Remembrance completed in 2016 in time for the 75thAnniversary of the sinking of the HMAS Sydney II off the WA coastline. The Fascine redevelopment is wide enough to encourage cyclists to enjoy Carnarvon’s magnificent waterfront. The Fascine is a perfect spot to admire some of the best sunsets in Australia.
