Published on Thursday, 9 July 2026 at 4:54:44 PM

When the sun sets in Carnarvon, the real show begins.

Home to some of Western Australia's darkest skies, Carnarvon has become an emerging destination for stargazing, astrophotography and astronomical experiences. With minimal light pollution, dry winter air and vast open landscapes, it's the perfect place to witness the Milky Way stretching from horizon to horizon.

Whether you're a seasoned photographer, curious beginner or simply looking for an unforgettable evening under the stars, this weekend offers something for everyone.

Friday Night: Experience the Stars Through Yinggarda Eyes

Wooramulla Eco Cultural Journeys

Some skies are beautiful. Others tell stories.

As dusk settles over Carnarvon, join Wooramulla Eco Cultural Journeys for Come See the Night (Murroo Gudu), a truly unique evening where the world's oldest living culture meets one of Australia's most significant space exploration sites.

Hosted at the Carnarvon Space and Technology Museum, this immersive experience invites you to see the night sky through the eyes of the Yinggarda people. Beneath some of Western Australia's darkest skies, your Yinggarda cultural guide will share Dreaming stories and explain how the stars have guided seasonal movement, navigation and life on Country for tens of thousands of years.

Standing beside the historic OTC satellite dish, once part of the tracking network that supported NASA's Apollo missions, you'll also discover Carnarvon's remarkable role in the global space race. It's a rare opportunity to experience two knowledge systems, separated by thousands of years, yet connected by humanity's enduring fascination with the night sky.

As darkness falls, look through a telescope to explore distant planets, star clusters and galaxies before gathering in a relaxed yarning circle beneath the stars to enjoy a light grazing supper.

Saturday Evening: Astrophotography at the Carnarvon Space & Technology Museum

As darkness falls, photographers have the opportunity to experience something truly extraordinary.

Join Starbright Wonderland Photography for an immersive astrophotography workshop at the iconic Carnarvon Space and Technology Museum, where science, history and the night sky come together.

The evening begins before sunset with an in-depth theory session inside the museum theatre, where you'll learn how to confidently use your camera for night photography, including camera settings, focusing techniques, exposure and composition.

Then comes the highlight.

Workshop participants receive exclusive after-hours access to the museum grounds and the historic satellite dishes—an opportunity rarely available to the public. Once part of NASA's Deep Space Tracking Network that supported some of humanity's greatest space missions, these enormous dishes create one of Australia's most spectacular astrophotography locations.

As the Milky Way rises behind the dishes, you'll put your new skills into practice while learning how to adapt your camera settings for different compositions and lighting conditions.

Whether you're just starting your astrophotography journey or looking to refine your skills, this workshop offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to photograph one of Western Australia's most iconic astronomical landmarks.

Workshop includes:

  • Comprehensive astrophotography theory session
  • Sunset arrival and preparation
  • Exclusive after-hours access to the museum grounds

Prefer to Explore on Your Own?

One of the best things about Carnarvon is that you don't need to join a tour to enjoy our spectacular night skies.

Pack a chair, bring a blanket, download a stargazing app and head somewhere away from town lights. Winter offers some of the clearest skies of the year, making it an ideal time to photograph or simply admire the Milky Way.

Some of our favourite self-drive stargazing locations include:

  • Pelican Point – uninterrupted ocean horizons and dark skies.
  • Dwyer's Leap – beautiful reflections and wide-open skies.
  • Bush Bay – one of the region's darkest coastal locations.
  • Quobba Coast – combine beach camping with spectacular stargazing.
  • Wooramel River Retreat – one of the darkest skies in the Gascoyne.

Why Carnarvon?

Carnarvon's combination of low humidity, clear winter nights and limited light pollution makes it one of Western Australia's hidden gems for astrotourism. Whether you're capturing the Milky Way with your camera, discovering the stories of the Yinggarda people, inspiring the next generation of space enthusiasts or simply lying back and taking it all in, there's no better place to reconnect with the universe.

This weekend, don't just watch the sunset, stay after dark and discover why Carnarvon is becoming one of Western Australia's most exciting destinations for stargazing, astrophotography and unforgettable night sky experiences.
